Hi everyone!
Arteza recently sent me their Premium Sketchbook, which is 9x12 inches and contains 100 sheets in a set of 2. Looking online, this would cost about $21.98, which is a good price for a 100 sheets of 9x12" sketchbook. The Sketchbook is spiral bound with Acid-free 68 lb (100 gsm) perforated pages and is said to be able to take up any variety of dry media.
I find the paper quite pleasant to use with graphite, ink and coloured pencils. It has a slightly rough feel that brings out a lovely texture when used with graphite or coloured pencils. I also like the whiteness of the paper, it is slightly off white making it look natural. I made an illustration with coloured pencils using the sketchbook paper and I liked how it turned out. The texture of the paper makes it easy for the colours to blend well while still being able to make small details and fine lines.
The paper takes up fine liner, ball point ink and gel pen very well. I tried to use alcohol-based markers and found the colours blended well without any streaking. However, I did find there was some feathering and a lot of bleeding on the back of the paper staining the next page.
A couple of things I wasn't keen on with the sketch book was that I found the paper too thin for my liking. But this is just a personal preference. Another thing is that it was also hard to tear the pages on the perforated part. I always ended up tearing it from the spring making it look messy and having to use scissors or a blade to make a clean cut.
In conclusion, I can say that I am impressed with the sketchbook. Here are my pros and cons for this product:
Pros
- Lovely texture, feel and whiteness
- Takes up graphite, coloured pencils, fine liner, ballpoint and gel pens well
Cons
- Paper is too thin for my liking.
- It's hard to tear it cleanly form the perforated part
